What to do
Have one child sit in a chair or on the floor with eyes closed or covered with hands.
Approach this child with the clock, walking slowly from a distance from which the ticking is inaudible.
Walk in a straight line toward the child.
The child is to say, "Stop," when the ticking is heard. Mark the stopping point with a piece of masking tape. Put the child’s name on the tape. Repeat with several children, havingone child be the walker and another the listener.
Use string, a meter stick, or a ruler to measure the distances.
Make a graph comparing various distances recorded.
Discuss how other sounds in the room, building, or outside affect how well we can hear. Can we find a quieter place to play this game?
